課程概述

The course covers British literature and culture during Queen Victoria’s long reign, 1837-1901. This period witnessed one of the most radical changes in human history. This was the brilliant age of Charles Dickens, the Brontes, Lewis Carroll, George Eliot, Robert Browning, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling, Alfred, Lord Tennyson - and many others. It was also the age of industrialisation, urbanization, steam power, class conflict, Darwin, religious crisis, imperial expansion, information explosion, bureaucratization, the golden age of bacteriology and modern medicine - and much more. New concepts of inter-personal relations, social structures, political mechanisms, ethics, gender divides, national boundaries, and ethnic awareness challenged and redefined existing values and experiences. These rapid changes transform ways of perceptions of the world, new sense of community, social norms and values, that makes the Victorian society into a unique period. At the same time, the unrelentingly fast pace of change revises the meaning of human existence that decides their future and the present we now live in.

This course serves as an introduction to a rich variety of Victorian texts and to the social and cultural contexts that produced them. Students will gain interpretive and analytical skills to enhance their understanding of novels and poetry written during one of the most complex and challenging periods in modern history. At the heart of the course lies a question that was as critical for Victorian readers as it is for us today: how do these changes make the Victorian society was then that in turn made us the way we are now? How does literature offer writers and readers ways to understand and even critique their society?

本課程計畫以當代文化理論的閱讀角度切入維多利亞時期英國文學文本,閱讀文學與電影文本中反映出的當代想像與恐懼,藉由當代文化理論與小說電影文本的比對閱讀,開發更具省思內涵的閱讀與思考角度。課程內容除教師講授之外,更著重討論與作業練習,透過辯證思考與實際練習,培養英文文章閱讀、欣賞與思考,並培養閱讀英文文章的習慣以及批判思考的能力;此外,課程設計並強調從閱讀訓練表達、思考、批判與寫作的能力,課堂中強調互動的課程進行方式將提供學生較多的思考與表達機會,期以培養對英語學習與研究的熱誠與信心。 

課程目標
This course not only focuses on literature study but also serves as a critical guide to various thoughts that troubled modern people. Students will understand the world through literatures written in English, and closely observe how this former "Empire Upon Which The Sun Never Sets" experienced the most dramatic expansion of military force and cultural and economic dominance throughout its colonies around the world. This course will explore how the industrial revolution, the imperial expansion, aesthetic movement, and concurrent technology advancement have transformed the most powerful empire.

We’ll explore Victorian Literature that represent different strands of fiction, poetry, drama with legacies of history, culture, and politics. The readings and films selected engage with social and class structures, racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender relations, and questions of national identity, and they present some variety in narrative tones, style, and structure.

This course is mainly conducted in English when necessary and is open to those particularly willing to join rigorous discussion/debates on cultural and literary issues. Those who only want to take notes and do not like to interact with classmates, or do not wish to be engaged directly by the course instructor, should consider other available study options.

Learning Outcomes
To read literary and cultural texts with discernment and comprehension and with an understanding of their conventions.
To draw on relevant cultural and/or historical information to situate texts within their cultural, political, and historical contexts.
To perform critical, formal analyses of literary, cinematic, and other cultural texts.
To write focused analytical essays in clear, grammatical prose.
To employ logic, creativity, and interpretive skills to produce original, persuasive arguments.
To employ primary and/or secondary sources, with proper acknowledgment and citation, as they contribute to a critical essay’s thesis.

課程要求
修課學生需每週閱讀授課教師指定的閱讀進度,參與課程討論,每堂授課均有搭配閱讀進度的隨堂小考。學期間針對討論主題進行一次小組口頭報告,課程評量包括課堂測驗、期中考試、期末計畫、課程參與與課程表現。

This course put particular emphasis on class discussion that require
every student to take part in in-class discussion and a group
presentation. Written works include weekly quiz on assigned reading, midterm exam, and a term project on a topic and text(s) of your choice. This course regards highly of class participation and contribution.

1. Active participation in class and on Ceiba is required.
2. Before you study the text, please read the introduction to each author in Norton Anthology. The introductions will provide you with essential background knowledge.
3. Group presentation and in-class discussion will be needed. Sitting with your group members is suggested. Each group should consult with our TA at least one week before your presentation.
4. Regular attendance: This course expects participation and unreported absences—without asking for leave by email—may result in your failure in the course.
5. Individual Conference with A-jen: After the mid-term week, each student will be appointed with an individual conference with the instructor to discuss your final project. You need to prepare an abstract that contains the thesis statement, objectives and statements of methodology, and primary reference.
